The involucre is enclosed by broad, thin phyllaries, green to purplish, and subtended by a ring of up to eight leaf-like bracts. Occasionally a few bright yellow ray florets may be present

Flattened capsules, topped by two (usually) to four barbed bristles
Leaves:
Opposite, lanceolate, stalked, lined with large teeth. Lower stem leaves have a pair of narrow lobes at the base. Stems are hairless, usually purple
