Five pale to dark pink (occasionally all-white) petals, five stamens, five pistils and a ribbed calyx divided into five narrow lobes; flowers form dense, spherical clusters, up to 25 mm in diameter, at the top of leafless, downy stalks. The upper few cm of the stalk is cloaked by a narrow, purple or brownish sheath

Very narrow, hairless, linear, clustered, up to 10 cm long
